Choosing Your Maldives Atoll: North to South, Channel by Channel
Twenty-six atolls, hundreds of channels, and remarkably different diving from north to south. Here is how to pick the right Maldivian itinerary for what you want to see.
The Maldives is not one destination — it is at least four. Northern atolls deliver hammerheads and remote reefs, central atolls offer the iconic manta and whale shark sites, and the deep south brings tigers, threshers and untouched walls.
Central atolls — North & South Malé, Ari
The classic Maldivian experience: short transfers, world-famous channel dives (Kandooma Thila, Maaya Thila), Hanifaru Bay's manta aggregations (June–November) and reliable whale shark sightings on South Ari's southern fringe.
Northern atolls — Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu
Less frequented, longer crossings, more sharks. Hammerheads at Rasdhoo are accessible from Ari, but for true northern wilderness diving — including possible bait balls — head further still.
Deep south — Huvadhoo, Addu, Fuvahmulah
Fuvahmulah is now one of the best places in the world to dive with tiger sharks (year-round) and pelagic threshers. Addu offers Maldives' only WWII wreck, the British Loyalty. Huvadhoo's channels rival anything in the country for big-fish action.
