Diving Okinawa & Yonaguni: Subtropical Reefs and the Underwater Monument
Japan's southern islands hide warm reefs, hammerhead schools and the most debated archaeological site in the diving world.
Most divers do not associate Japan with tropical diving — but the Ryukyu archipelago, stretching south toward Taiwan, sits firmly in the subtropics with hard-coral reefs, manta rays and one of the world's most reliable winter hammerhead aggregations.
Okinawa main island and Kerama
The Kerama Islands, a 50-minute ferry from Naha, offer warm-water reef diving with healthy hard coral, sea turtles and manta cleaning stations at Manza in season.
Yonaguni and the Monument
Yonaguni, Japan's westernmost island, hosts the famous Yonaguni Monument — a stepped underwater rock formation whose origin (natural or man-made) remains contested. Whatever you believe, the dive is dramatic and currents are serious.
From December to February, schooling hammerheads arrive at Hammerhead Rock — among the most reliable winter hammerhead encounters in Asia.
Getting there
Fly to Naha, then domestic flight to Yonaguni (1.5 h). Most operators speak Japanese first — but English-friendly liveaboards are increasingly available.
