Malapascua: Daily Thresher Sharks at Monad Shoal
A small island off the northern tip of Cebu where, every dawn, pelagic thresher sharks rise from 200 m to be cleaned in shallow water. Nowhere else on Earth does this.
Pelagic threshers (Alopias pelagicus) are deep-water sharks rarely seen by humans — except at Monad Shoal, a submerged seamount 30 minutes from Malapascua, where they visit a cleaning station almost every morning.
The dawn dive
Boats leave at 5 am. You descend to 25 m on a sandy plateau, kneel on a designated viewing line and wait. Within 10–20 minutes, sleek silver sharks with their unmistakable scythe-like tails glide over the cleaning rocks. The dive is brief (NDL is the limiting factor), still, and unforgettable.
Beyond the threshers
Malapascua also offers manta encounters at Kemod Shoal, mandarin fish dusk dives at Lighthouse, and excellent macro along Gato Island's wall.
Getting there
Fly to Cebu, transfer 4 hours north to Maya, ferry 30 minutes to Malapascua. Most divers stay 4–5 nights to combine threshers with the surrounding sites.
