Mabul: The Macro Capital of Borneo
Sipadan's quiet neighbour is one of Asia's richest muck-diving sites — frogfish, mimic octopus, flamboyant cuttlefish, all within fin-kicks of the jetty.
While most divers come to Mabul for the boat ride to Sipadan, the seasoned macro lover knows the real treasure is right under the resort jetty: black sand, artificial reefs and a roll-call of weird that rivals Lembeh.
House reef and night dives
Most Mabul resorts have a house reef accessible by walk-in or short boat hop. Frogfish (giant, painted, hairy), mimic octopus, blue-ring octopus, mandarinfish at dusk and bobtail squid at night — all in 5–12 m of water.
Boat muck sites
Eel Garden, Paradise II, Lobster Wall and the artificial reef structures around the island all offer different macro themes. Local guides are exceptional — most have spent 20+ years on these sites.
Combine with Sipadan
The classic Sabah trip: 3 days Sipadan + 2 days Mabul macro. Stay on Mabul and let the boat come to you for both.
